"The French Campaign in Egypt and Syria (1798–1801) was Napoleon Bonaparte's (1769 - 1821) campaign in the Orient, ostensibly to protect French trade interests, undermine Britain's access to India, and to establish scientific enterprise in the region. It was the primary purpose of the Mediterranean campaign of 1798, a series of naval engagements that included the capture of Malta.

Despite many decisive victories and an initially successful expedition into Syria, Napoleon and his Armée d'Orient were eventually forced to withdraw, after sowing political disharmony in France, conflict in Europe, and suffering the defeat of the supporting French fleet at the Battle of the Nile."

"l have printed a small catechism and a reader in Pondichéry for easy reading of Thai writings in our characters. I shall send you copies to Macao. I have asked you about three months ago, to try to send me a few typefaces. I have quite a lot to print and to distribute in a lot of places."

Der französische Apostolische Vikar Arnaud-Antoine Garnault (1745 - 1811) an den französischen Missionar Jean-Joseph Descourvières (1744 - 1804) über den Druck von Thai-Texten in lateinischen Buchstaben:

"I begin by thanking you for the small printing press you were kind enough to send me. I have at last received it two years ago: and the Almighty God had not so willed that it went the destiny of other goods sent the year before, and which were taken by the pirates. This accident happened to me three times since I returned to Bangkok. I have used it immediately ; but my unavoidable business increased from day to day, it was almost a year now that I printed almost nothing. From the first page, we were much inconvenienced by 1° H h, much repeated in the Siamese; item a. The students at first supplied them with letters made of wood, and then they had found the way of making a mould of clay and to melt lead in it. That had succeeded quite well; but it took such an extremely long time The mould could be used only once for each letter, each time we must break the mould in order to take out the letter. The words ae and oe are lacking entirely; the students started to help us; but the greatest difficulty was that these letters constantly in use are now almost worn out. They wanted ardently that you send us the moulds from Europe, at least a mould for each letter. The quantity and the expense will probably not be far too great. If we could have all the vowels with the various accents, grave, accute, and circumflex on each one of them; â, à, ä, ê, è, é, etc. Both the letters œ, æ, and another without accents: a, e, i, j, o, u, also coupled into dipthongs, rendering Siamese sounds. The sign which the French use for elision, as in the words: l'âme, l'esprit, we apply to u, u; it renders for us a u in Siamese which is quite near to the French sound of ‘u’ (อือ?), and is distinguished from another sound which corresponds to the 'u' in Portuguese and Greek. The accents on the vowels make for us the short sound, ascending or descending. (เสียงสูง, เสียงต่ำ)

As to your request for Thai books for Cardinal Borgia [Stefano Borgia, 1731 - 1804, Mitglied der Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide], I have not been able, since receiving your letter to copy it quite neatly as beseeming His Eminence. I shall start to send you one or two copies from what we have printed, in case he agrees. Next year, if God helps us, I shall send you our books in Siamese characters, on Siamese paper, and in its proper form. "
