Morgenstern, Oskar <1902 - 1977>: On the accuracy of economic observations. -- 2. ed. -- Princeton : Princeton Univ. Press, 1963. -- 322 S. ; 20 cm.

Die Statistikdiagramme geben also meistens eher qualitative als korrekte quantitative Beziehungen wieder.

Sultan Sultan Sir Abdu'l Hamid Halim Shah II ibni Ahmad Taj ud-din al-Mukarram Shah  (1864 -1943) ist Sultan (‏سلطان‎) von Kedah (قدح).

"Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah or 'Sultan Sir Abdu'l Hamid Halim Shah II ibni Ahmad Taj ud-din al-Mukarram Shah KCMG, (4 June 1864 – 13 May 1943) was the 25th Sultan of Kedah. He reigned from 1881 to 1943. He was the son of Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarram Shah and Wan Hajar.

During his reign, the Sultan had asked for a $2,500,000 loan from Siam during a state financial crisis in 1905. The loan was extended with the proviso that a Financial Advisor from the court of Siam be accepted and a State Council be created to assist the Sultan in the administration of all public affairs. This resulted in the promulgation of a new constitution on 29 July 1905. The state council were run by his brothers followed by their sons. The formation of the State Council thus curbed the Sultan's administrative powers.

The Sultan had several wives and partners; Che Manjelara, Che Sofiah, Sharifah Fatimah Binti Syed Idrus, Sharifah Seha Binti Syed Hussein, Che Spachendra, Sharifah Mariam and Che Laraseh. The Sultan's seventh son and twentieth child with Makche Manjelara, Tunku Abdul Rahman, who would later became the first Prime Minister of Malaysia.

He was succeeded by Sultan Badlishah."

"The new postal service was treated like a new toy by king and public alike. The lower classes at once discovered in it a heavensent means of effectively and safely annoying their superiors by sending vituperative anonymous letters and bundles of trash c.o.d. The upper classes naturally hated it; but as they were slow in retaliating, their attackers soon tired of the sport and allowed the Post Office to resume its normal function. One charming Siamese touch was an attempt to cultivate the taste for letters by placing sandalwood in the bottom of letter boxes to impart a fragrance to the missives. Under Siamese management, however, the Postal Department gradually lost its fine organization and became a model of inefficiency. Almost no stamps were to be had even at the main branch; letters failed to reach their destination; clerks were illiterate; and confusion reigned. Until 1916 the Department ran at a large deficit."

Erste Telefonverbindung in Bangkok und nach Paknam

"Complaints about the postal and telegraph service are mild compared with the irritation caused by Bangkok’s telephone system. The telephone was introduced into Bangkok in 1881. At first it was used exclusively by the Department of War, presumably because its members were thought to be the only ones robust enough to wrestle with it. Five years later it was opened to the public. The ensuing fifty-three years of bad service have been successively blamed on electric-light cables, tramways, street traffic the mastication of wires by insects, the monsoon, and the hot weather.

At first it was said that the lines would be re-laid and the instruments cleaned out, and that trained operators who understood English would be installed; but these promised improvements never materialized. Instead, the rates went up. The original charge of Tcs. 5 a month was found to be unremunerative and was raised to Tcs. 10. Thirty years later it became Tcs. 15, and the service was worse than ever despite repeated complaints and as many promises to improve. A telephone service with Singapore was opened in 1935, but the Bangkok public had to be informed of this through the Saigon papers. Services were started with Berlin in 1930 and with London in 1932. The dial system was installed in 1934, and a new disillusionment rapidly ensued. In the telephone directory there were always many incorrect numbers, and the authorities took the attitude that such errors were not the concern of the Telephone Department."

  • The King and I (1951), ein Musical mit Yul Brynner und Deborah Kerr
  • Anna und der König (1999), mit Jodie Foster und Chow Yun-Fat"

"Dear Harvey, Not only I but others who have incidentally been made acquainted with H.E. the Kromatah's [กรมท่า] (Foreign Minister) point-blank announcement that Prisdang [พระอง์คเจ้า ปฤษฎาง์ค ชุมสาย, 1851 - 1932] was accredited as "Envoy for Europe", have been greatly amused by it. Memorandum von Charles Marie Le Myre de Vilers (1833 - 1918), französischer Gouverneur von Cochinchina:

"In September 1881, Le Myre de Vilers outlined the problem in a memorandum to Admiral Cloué, minister of the navy and colonies. He described the danger to French interests of the eastward gravitation of Britain's imperial frontier in Asia and the steady movement of British capital and naval resources in the direction of China. He argued that Siam would inevitably submit to a formal British takeover on the way: everything points to the fact that the British will not be slow to impose their protectorate on this kingdom.' Once in control of Bangkok the British would place gunboats on the Siamese half of the Tonle Sap [ទន្លេសាប / โตนเลสาบ], and since the lake drained into the Mekong, British demands for the free navigation of the lower Mekong would soon follow: 'Cochinchina would become completely exposed, and we should have to assemble on the banks of the river the most powerful means of defence... a veritable army.'14 Le Myre de Vilers proposed a policy of informal penetration of French influence into Siam: an 'active' consul of his own nomination, expert in Indo-Chinese affairs, should be sent to Bangkok. This agent would then liaise closely with Saigon to develop a wide variety of schemes for promoting the growth of French commercial and political links with the kingdom."

"The absence of knowledge on the part of our consul  [Exportkaufmann (Josef) Hugo Schönberger, 1838 - 1900] is very noticeable and I regret that my reception had not been better arranged from want of proper and previous arrangements.

"The Emperor was gracious enough but was probably taken by surprise for he could not have thought that I only desired to present His Majesty's letter privately.

"The Consul himself was not allowed to be presented to the Emperor but I was allowed to have an interpreter which was arranged that Mr. Schönberger [Victor Schönberger, 1844 - 1893, Bruder und Geschäftspartner von Konsul Hugo Schönberger] was to accompany me-this gentleman perspired freely and was very nervous at the audience which must have been noticed by the Emperor."

"The King of Siam, my August Sovereign, has charged me to present to Your Imperial Majesty His autograph letter of friendship and congratulation, to which I have the great honour to deliver today at Your Majesty s feet, and availed myself with the greatest pleasure of this first opportunity to send a special envoy to Your Majesty s Court, to express the high sense he entertains of the value of the amicable relations between these two countries, which have never been interrupted and so ably maintained in all cases by Your Imperial Majesty s representative in Siam.

"I cannot suppress my deepest satisfaction that it was my happy destination of having been entrusted with this most honourable mission, and thus being the first Siamese envoy who has been sent to Your Majesty's Empire I must humbly beg to tender to Your Majesty my grateful thanks for the grace which Your Majesty has been pleased to accord me."

"I am also glad to state that the reports of my ambassadors, Minister Residents or Extraordinary Envoys, who have several times had the honour to be received by your August Sovereign are full of praise of His Majesty's hospitality and goodwill to facilitate the negotiation of our mutual treaties.

"I am glad to make your Highness acquaintance and welcome you heartily as the first envoy of Siam who ever visited my Empire and I hope you will be pleased with your stay at Vienna."

Prinz Prisdang Jumsai (พระอง์คเจ้า ปฤษฎาง์ค ชุมสาย, 1851 - 1932) an den siamesischen Konsul  in Wien, (Josef) Hugo Schönberger (1838 - 1900):

"I am getting on well with my business here (inspection). I had the honour of dining with the Emperor [ Wilhelm I., 1797 - 1888] again last Sunday when the Turkish Ambassador and suite came to present a decoration to the Emperor and I was decorated with the Red Eagle. An Adjutant A.D.C. [Aide-de-camp] of the Minister of War has been attached to me who takes me to see military establishments daily - unfortunately he couldn’t speak English so an interpreter was necessary which makes my visit rather unsatisfactory."
