Vorsicht bei den Statistikdiagrammen!

Bei thailändischen Statistiken muss man mit allen Fehlerquellen rechnen, die in folgendem Werk beschrieben sind:

Die Statistikdiagramme geben also meistens eher qualitative als korrekte quantitative Beziehungen wieder.

Über Likay-Truppen (ลิเก, Volksoper) in Bangkok: es herrscht ein Überangebot bei zurückgehender Nachfrage. Sponsorinnen werden rar. Eine Likay-Truppe besteht aus 10 bis 15 Schauspielern und Schauspielerinnen. Eine Nacht-Aufführung (drei Stunden) kostet ca. 300 Baht, jeder Schauspieler bekommt 20 bis 30 Baht. Außerhalb der Aufführung haben die Schauspieler Freizeit.

Conference of Patani Freddom Fighters: Gründung von Bersatu ("Einheit") = MPRMP = Council of the Muslim people of Pattani, einer Dachvereinigung separatistischer Organsationen von Pattani. Mitglieder:

Zwischen August 1997 und Januar 1998 verübt Bersatu unter dem Kodenamen "Falling leaves" koordinierte Terroranschläge.

Am 31. August 1989 verabschiedet die Gründungsversammlung folgende Erklärung:

"We hereby declared that:
  1. The Patani liberation struggle is a struggle to achieve total independence of a Malay Islamic sovereign state;
  2. Our struggle is an armed JIHAD [‏جهاد‎ ] which is obligated by Islam and upheld by the Malay people of Patani;
  3. We oppose all Thai colonial policies and programmes which persistently attempt to eradicate our faith, race, language, and culture;
  4. We condemn all types of oppression, injustice, and violation of human rights, whether in the form of killing, detention without trial, torture, and discrimination;
  5. We denounce all forms of cooperation with Thai colonialists in exploiting the economic resources and wealth of Patani;
  6. We will take firm action against those who cooperate with Thai colonialists if such cooperation is deemed detrimental to the struggle of the Patani people;
  7. We appeal to all Muslims to support our sacred struggle;
  8. We call upon freedom-loving nations and organizations to provide their moral and material support for the struggle of the Patani people;
  9. We will cooperate with all liberation movements and peace-loving people throughout the world, particularly the Islamic movements."

Die Augustnummer der Zeitschrift Krungthep 30 (กรุงเทพ 30) zeigt das Bild eines Mönchs mit einem Heft des Playboy Magazins unter dem Arm. Der Mönch macht mit seiner rechten Hand das Zeichen "Ich liebe dich". Die abgebildete Person zeigt starke Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Ex-Mönch Sorasak Pornrattanasomboon (Samee Jiab), der bekannt wurde durch Erpressung und eine Affäre mit einer Frau. Das Titelbild führte dazu, dass Mönche die Zeitschrift der Blasphemie beschuldigten. Hunderte von Mönchs-Studenten der buddhistischen Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (มหาจุฬาลงกรณราชวิทยาลัย) protestierten und forderten, dass alle Exemplare von Krungthep 30 (กรุงเทพ 30) aus dem Verkehr gezogen werden und dass der Staat rechtlich gegen die Zeitschrift vorgeht. Phra Maha Pirom Kowito (โกวิโท), Präsident des Studenten-Kommitees der Universität, behauptete: "Eroding religious faith is tantamount to undermining national security." Der eigentliche Grund der Aufregung der Mönche: der Artikel im Innern der Zeitschrift listet die zahlreichen Skandale von Mönchen in den letzten zwei Jahren auf: Korruption, Betrug und Sex. Die thailändische Pressezensur warnte die Zeitschrift schon.

Das Militär schenkt dem Kronprinzen (1952 - ) ein F-16 Mehzweckkampfflugzeug im Wert von US$ 30 Millionen. Der Kronprinz hat schon über 1000 Stunden Flugerfahrung mit F-16s. Mit dem F-16 Überschallflugzeug ist die Strecke Bangkok - Chiang Mai in ca. 15 Minuten bewältigt.

"The Martyrs of Thailand (called also Seven Blessed Martyrs of Songkhon) are seven Roman Catholic Thais executed in Songkhon, Thailand in December 1940 by local police forces. They were beatified by Pope John Paul II in Rome on October 22, 1989.[1]

The names of the martyrs are:

  • Blessed Philip Siphong Onphitak, catechist, 33 years old
  • Blessed Sister Agnes Phila, 31 years old, belonged to Lovers of the Holy Cross Congregation
  • Blessed Sister Lucia Khambang, 23 years old, belonged to Lovers of the Holy Cross Congregation
  • Blessed Agatha Phutta, 59 years old
  • Blessed Cecilia Butsi, 16 years old
  • Blessed Bibiana Khampai, 15 years old
  • Blessed Maria Phon, 14 years old

Bangkok Post: Suthon Sukphisit (สุธน สุขพิสิฐี)

Über die katholische St. Joseph's Church (วัดนักบุญยอแซฟ) in Ayutthaya. Die Kirche versorgt ca. 300 Katholiken, hat einen Priester, der werktags täglich um 19:00 eine Messe liest und am Sonntag um 9:00. Die Kirche hat eine Schule bis Mathayom 3 mit 150 Schülern, die gratis Mittagessen bekommen. Da die 28 Glasfenster der 1891 eingeweihten Kirche in Thailand als besonders wertvoll gelten, sind Ballspiele in der Umgebung der Kirche verboten. Jeden Freitagabend warten die Kinder und Alten vor der Kirche auf die Jungen, die aus der Arbeit in Bangkok übers Wochenende heimkommen. Nach einem Schwatz geht man in die Messe.

"Typhoon Gay (international designation: 8929, JTWC designation: 32W) was a powerful tropical cyclone which caused significant damage in Chumphon Province (ชุมพร) of Thailand and eastern India in November 1989. It was the worst typhoon to affect the Malay peninsula in 35 years. The storm formed on November 1 in the southern Gulf of Thailand, crossed the Malay Peninsula, crossed into the Northern Indian Ocean, and strengthened into a category 5 before making landfall in India, dissipating over the Western Ghats mountains of India on November 10. The storm was not only unique in being the only tropical cyclone to hit Thailand with full typhoon wind speed (120 mph at landfall), but its origin in the Gulf, its small size, its high intensity, and the fact the storm was active in two different tropical cyclone basins also made it an unusual tropical storm.

The beginnings of Gay were first tracked on November 1, when an area of disturbed weather showed on satellite images of the southern Gulf of Thailand. A concentrated convection area with an upper level anticyclone was found and ships reported a relatively high surface pressure of 1008 hPa. The disturbance of the monsoon trough continued to consolidate, and thus at 21:00 UTC a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued. Warm waters of the gulf combined with geographical circumstances in the gulf helped to spin up the cyclone. Satellite images showed the intensification, while the surface pressure at the Thai and Malay coast increased due to the subsidence of the air uplifted by the storm. On November 2 18:00 UTC the intensification increased, thus the storm reached typhoon wind speeds at around November 3 0:00 UTC.

Gay continued to intensify, reaching wind speeds of 100 knots (190 km/h) shortly before it made landfall on November 4 06:00 UTC. During the pass over the narrow Kra Isthmus (คอคอดกระ) the storm lost slightly in intensity, which it quickly gained back in the Andaman Sea.

Moving north-northwest across the Bay of Bengal at a speed of about 10 knots (19 km/h), it slowly intensified back to 100 knots (190 km/h), but then restrictions in the upper level outflow stopped it from gaining anymore speed until November 7. On November 8 06:00 UTC the winds reached 130 knots (240 km/h) and at 18:00 UTC it became a Category 5 cyclone. Gay made landfall over a low populated area of India about 220 kilometres (140 mi) north of Madras at it's peak intensity. There was initial concern that Gay might succeed in crossing India and reach the Arabian Sea, but the cyclone moved more northerly than expected. Due to its very small size, the cyclone deteriorated quickly, and it dissipated over the Western Ghats of India by November 10.[1]

 Impact

The Unocal oil drilling ship Seacrest, moored in the gulf, became the first victim of the storm, where 91 perished and six survived. Major damage was caused to the coral reefs offshore Thailand. The eye of the typhoon passed nearby and its associated strong waves capsized the ship. During the landfall in Thailand, Gay claimed at least 458 lives, also more than 600 seamen were reported missing. Two hundred fishing vessels were lost. Because it made landfall in a rural area with a low population, it only claimed 39 lives in India but still destroyed or damaged 20,000 homes."

In Thailand sorgt der Name des Typhoon Gay für Belustigung: die Boulevardpresse schreibt dass der Typhon seinem Namen gay (เกย์ = Schwuler) aller Ehre macht.

Fürst Franz Josef II. Maria Aloys Alfred Karl Johannes Heinrich Michael Georg Ignatius Benediktus Gerhardus Majella von und zu Liechtenstein, Herzog von Troppau und Jägerndorf, Graf zu Rietberg (1906 - 1989) stirbt und macht damit König Bhumibol Platz als Nummer 1 in der Weltrangliste der am längsten regierenden Monarchen. Franz Josef II. hatte seit 1938 regiert.
