सप्त स्वराः

श्रुतिभ्यः स्युः स्वराः षड्जर्षभगान्धारमध्यमाः ।
पञ्जमो धैवतश्चाथ निषाद इति सप्त ते ॥
तेषां संज्ञाः सरिगमपधनीत्यपरा मताः ।

śrutibhyaḥ syuḥ svarāḥ ṣaḍjarṣabhagāndhāramadhyamāḥ
pañcamo dhaivataścātha niṣāda iti sapta te.
teṣāṃ saṃjñāḥ sa-ri-ga-ma-pa-dha-nītyaparā matāḥ.

"Auf der Grundlage der Śrutis bestehen diese sieben Svaras (Tonstufen): ṣaḍja, ṛṣabha, gāndhāra, madhyama, pañcama, dhaivata und niṣāda. Andere traditionelle Bezeichnungen sind: sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni."

ते मन्द्रमध्यमताराख्यस्थानभेदात्त्रिधा मताः ।

te mandramadhyamatārākhyasthānabhedāt tridhā matāḥ.

"Diese [Svaras] sind dreifach entsprechen den Stimmregistern (sthāṇa): mandra (tief), madhya (mittel) und tāra (hoch)."
