Mit "Karnatische Musik" (कर्णाटकसंगीत = Karnāṭakasaṃgīta) bezeichnet man die klassische (= Oberschichts-) Musik der heutigen südindischen Staaten
die sich seit spätestens dem 16. Jhdt. n. Chr. weitgehend unabhängig von der nordindischen Hindustani-Musik entwickelt hat.

Karnatische Musik war in ihrer Entwicklung bis ins 20. Jhdt. abhängig vom Sponsoring durch Fürsten und andere wohlhabende Personen sowie durch reiche Tempel. Im 20. Jahrhundert übernehmen Musikvereine (संगीत सभा = saṃgīta sabhā) das Patronat.
Diese Musikvereine sind vor allem währen der Wintermonate (Dezember - Januar) sehr aktiv. So veranstalteten in Chennai (சென்னை) in der Wintersaison 1994/1995 39 Musikvereine insgesamt 1275 Konzerte. Neben Chennai gibt es solche karnatische Musikvereine vor allem auch in Bangalore (ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು), Mysore (ಮೈಸೂರು), Vijayawada (విజయవాడ), aber auch außerhalb von Südindien in Kolkatta (কলকাতা), Mumbai (मुंबई) und Delhi (दिल्ली ; دہلی ).

Mysore Chowdiah Hall, Bangalore
Erbaut: 1980 in Form einer Violine zum Gedächtnis an den Violinkünstler Tirumakudalu Chowdiah (Mysore T. Chowdiah) (ಸಂಗೀತ ರತ್ನ ತಿರುಮಕೂಡಲು ಚೌಡಯ್ಯ ) (1895 - 1967)
An einer Universität wurde der erste Studiengang für karnatische Musik 1937 an der Madras University durch P. Sambamoorthy (1901 - 1973) eingerichtet. Seither gibt es solche Studiengänge an vielen Universitäten.
Ein großes Archiv karnatischer Musik unterhält Sampradaya in Chennai.
